Most Cavaliers with heart or spine problems look completely healthy.
Researchers scanned 555 Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. Every single owner had declared their dog free of symptoms. At twelve months, 25% already had syringomyelia. By six years, 70% did. Not sick dogs. Dogs whose owners were certain nothing was wrong.
Of every 10 healthy-looking Cavaliers over six, 7 were already changed inside.
Here is what else is common in the breed. An estimated 50% to 95% of the breed carries Chiari-like malformation, a skull too small for the brain inside it. Over half have a heart murmur by five, and nearly all of them by ten. Mitral valve disease is twenty times more common in your dog than in the average breed, and in one US population of 300,000 dogs, 5% died of it. Among Cavaliers, 50% did.
In 2022 an Oslo court ruled that breeding this dog violates Norway's Animal Welfare Act. Norway's Supreme Court upheld it. The court decided the breed has too many inherited health problems to keep breeding.
Most vets will not bring this up at a routine check-up, because there is nothing to treat yet in a dog with no symptoms.
Heart problems usually develop before owners notice anything, which is why many Cavalier owners start supporting heart health while their dog is still young and well.
You cannot change his genetics. You can change what he eats.
Your Cavalier's skull shape, his genes and his heart valve were all set before you got him. None of those can be changed by a supplement, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
What you can control is his daily nutrition. The heart is a muscle, and the nutrients it uses come from his food.

Finally something I can do

Most dog heart supplements are low in omega-3
Omega-3 EPA/DHA has more research behind it for dog heart health than anything else, and most dog chews carry very little of it. One of the best selling dog heart supplements gives 25 mg per serving. This one gives 300 mg.
Many of them contain hawthorn
It is in a lot of dog cardiac supplements, including one of the market leaders at 100 mg per chew, and it can interact with common heart medications such as pimobendan and ACE inhibitors. Around half of Cavaliers end up on one of those at some point, so we left it out.
Buying separately means making seven decisions yourself
Which form of CoQ10. How much taurine for a small dog. Whether the fish oil is fresh. What to leave out. Most owners end up with six to eight bottles, splitting human-sized doses, and no way to check whether the amounts are sensible.

In the 555-dog study every owner described their dog as healthy, and a quarter of the one-year-olds already had spinal changes. In this breed, "no symptoms yet" is common. There is no minimum age for a food-based supplement like this one, and most owners start early because heart and joint problems usually develop before any signs show. Check with your vet first if your dog is under a year old or on medication.
Yes. 13 to 18 lb is the breed standard and it is what we formulated around, but plenty of real Cavaliers sit above it. The doses here are nutritional rather than pharmaceutical, and the margin is comfortable across the range a Cavalier actually comes in. If your dog is well over 20 lb, mention it to your vet and they will tell you whether to adjust.
No supplement is proven to slow or prevent mitral valve disease, and we do not claim it does. What we can show you is the dose. Omega-3 EPA/DHA has the best evidence of anything in canine heart health, veterinary cardiology works around 65 mg per kilo per day, and a 15 lb Cavalier getting an all-dog chew is typically receiving under 100 mg. We give 300 mg. We are not claiming a cure. We are saying that if you give your dog omega-3 at all, the amount should be high enough to matter.
Most vets are comfortable with these ingredients and will often say they "won't hurt, and may help." We deliberately left out hawthorn precisely because it can interact with common heart medications. Why we made this
Like a lot of Cavalier people, we learned the breed's heart story the hard way, and found ourselves standing in the kitchen every morning, sorting human supplements into a pill organizer, guessing at doses, hoping we were helping.
