Most French Bulldogs are at the vet for something within the year.

Researchers pulled a full year of UK veterinary records for 2,228 French Bulldogs. Almost 72% of them had at least one health problem written down. Not old dogs. Not sick dogs. All of them.

Of every 10 French Bulldogs, 7 had something recorded in a single year.

The four most common were ear infections, at 14 in every 100, then diarrhoea, then conjunctivitis, then the skin in his folds. Those four are the everyday reality of the breed, and none of them is rare.

A later study compared them against every other dog in the database. French Bulldogs had higher odds on 20 of the 43 common problems measured. Narrow nostrils, 42 times. Airway obstruction, 31 times. The skin in his folds, 11 times.

Life expectancy for the breed sits at about 9.8 years, against roughly 12.5 for UK dogs overall. That is somewhere near three years, and it is the reason his owners are the way they are.

Why only one breed
